Important note

This guide outlines traditional practices from each of the cultures and provides a context for interaction. The degree to which individuals and families adhere to cultural beliefs, or practice cultural traditions varies widely across any culture. In addition, some CALD clients have migrated from interim countries of resettlement and may have embraced aspects of those cultures. Also, 2nd and 3rd generations in New Zealand may have acculturated to the extent that there are few, if any, noticeable differences in belief and practices from the New Zealand culture.

It is imperative, to avoid stereotyping, that the degree of acculturation (level of assimilation to the host culture) of every client and their family is assessed on an individual basis.

Ask, and never assume!
